Alternative to Smap3D P&ID.
Smap3D P&ID is a database-driven standalone software for Windows — capable, but with a clear IT footprint: SQL Server, client install, Windows landscape. piblaster delivers the same core result in the browser, without running a database in-house.
What Smap3D P&ID does well
Smap3D P&ID is an established CAD-independent tool with an extensive symbol library, a report and list generator, and smart validation logic. Its target is classic plant engineering IT: client install on Windows, data storage in a SQL Server. For shops with a fixed Windows stack and a strong SOLIDWORKS integration, it's a clean choice.
Where the effort sits
- Windows editions: at least Windows 11 Enterprise or Professional, 64-bit.
- Database: Microsoft SQL Server (2019+ for current reporting features).
- Licensing: classic buy models, often with maintenance contracts.
- Team growth: new users mean new client installs.
piblaster vs. Smap3D P&ID
| Criterion | piblaster | Smap3D P&ID |
|---|---|---|
| Delivery | SaaS in the browser | Client install per workstation |
| Operating system | Any (browser) | Windows 10/11 Pro/Enterprise 64-bit |
| Data storage | Managed, EU servers | SQL Server in-house (or cloud) |
| Standards | DIN EN ISO 10628 | DIN EN ISO 10628 / ANSI/ISA 5.1 |
| CAD coupling | Not the focus | SOLIDWORKS-close, standalone available |
| Team onboarding | Login invite | New client install |
When Smap3D is still the right pick
- You already run SQL Server in-house and want data strictly on-prem.
- You couple closely to SOLIDWORKS or Inventor.
- Maintenance contracts and classic buy models are set.
When piblaster is the better fit
- You don't want to run a SQL Server just to maintain P&IDs.
- New colleagues and external reviewers should reach the diagram without setup.
- Mac, Linux or iPad users are part of the project work.
Frequently asked
Do I need to run a database server for piblaster?
No. piblaster is a SaaS offering — data storage, backups and updates are on us. Servers are in the EU.
Is Smap3D P&ID browser-capable?
No. Per the official documentation, Smap3D P&ID is a Windows client installation attached to a SQL Server. There is a free viewer, but authoring and editing happen on the installed Windows client.
Can piblaster import diagrams from Smap3D?
For migration projects we talk with you directly. Depending on symbol conventions and source format a lot can be automated — contact us for a joint assessment.
Are there structured reports and lists?
Yes. piblaster generates the BOM automatically from the diagram and exports it to Excel. That covers the most important reporting case Smap3D serves.
Try it yourself?
Try piblaster free for 30 days — no installer, no credit card for the trial.

Alternative to M4 PLANT.
M4 PLANT from CAD Schroer is a mature Windows CAD suite for 2D and 3D plant design. If you only need a standards-compliant P&ID with BOM — in the browser, no Windows requirement — piblaster is the direct route.
Alternative to PlantEngineer.
PlantEngineer from X-Visual is a strong Visio add-in — but that's exactly the problem if you don't have Visio, don't want Visio, or work on macOS or Linux. piblaster does the same core job without the Visio dependency.
When Lucidchart isn't enough for P&ID.
Lucidchart is a solid general diagram tool in the browser. As soon as the P&ID has to carry standards compliance, a BOM, tag logic and reviewer workflows, the tool runs out. piblaster keeps the browser comfort — and adds the P&ID specialisation.
