Alternative to PlantEngineer.
PlantEngineer from X-Visual is a strong Visio add-in — but that's exactly the problem if you don't have Visio, don't want Visio, or work on macOS or Linux. piblaster does the same core job without the Visio dependency.
What PlantEngineer is — and what it requires
PlantEngineer is an add-in for Microsoft Visio. Vendor X-Visual states the requirements clearly in their FAQ: 64-bit Windows 10 or higher, Microsoft Visio Standard or Professional from 2016 on (2019 or Visio Plan 2 recommended), Visio Plan 1 is not supported. And also clear: PlantEngineer does not run on macOS or Linux.
Why that hurts in day-to-day work
- Visio licenses are a separate cost — Plan 1 is not enough, Plan 2 is noticeably more expensive.
- External reviewers without Visio can't edit the drawing on equal terms.
- Mac and Linux colleagues are left out.
- Updates of Visio, Office and PlantEngineer have to be coordinated.
piblaster vs. PlantEngineer
| Criterion | piblaster | PlantEngineer |
|---|---|---|
| Base | Standalone web app | Visio add-in |
| Operating system | Anything with a browser | Windows 10/11 64-bit |
| Extra license | None | Microsoft Visio Std/Pro from 2016 |
| macOS / Linux / iPad | Yes | No (excluded per vendor) |
| Symbol standard | DIN EN ISO 10628 | ISO 10628, DIN EN 62424, ANSI/ISA 5.1, PIP |
| Team collaboration | Web-native | Via files / SQL Server 2019 |
| Update path | Central, via browser | Client update incl. Visio compatibility |
When PlantEngineer still makes sense
- You already have a mature Visio setup and licenses in-house.
- You explicitly need the ANSI/ISA-5.1 or PIP standard for US projects.
- Windows-only is your company standard anyway.
When piblaster is the better fit
- You have no Visio license — and don't want to buy one.
- Colleagues partly work on Mac, Linux or iPad.
- You want to bring in reviewers and auditors without a software setup.
- You don't need a 3D VR model — you need a clean P&ID plus BOM.
Frequently asked
Do I need Microsoft Visio for piblaster?
No. piblaster is a standalone application. There's no Visio requirement, no Visio license need and no tie to Microsoft Office. A modern browser is enough.
Can PlantEngineer really not run on macOS?
X-Visual state in their own FAQ that PlantEngineer is only compatible with Microsoft Windows and use on iOS and Linux systems is excluded. For Mac users that leaves either a Windows VM or a Visio-free alternative like piblaster.
Which standards does piblaster support?
The symbol library follows DIN EN ISO 10628. For common German and European practice that's the relevant standard. Custom symbols and company standards can be added.
What about migrating existing Visio drawings?
We help individually with moving existing PlantEngineer or Visio P&IDs across. Talk to us about a migration project — depending on scope and symbol conventions, a lot can be automated.

Alternative to M4 PLANT.
M4 PLANT from CAD Schroer is a mature Windows CAD suite for 2D and 3D plant design. If you only need a standards-compliant P&ID with BOM — in the browser, no Windows requirement — piblaster is the direct route.
Alternative to Smap3D P&ID.
Smap3D P&ID is a database-driven standalone software for Windows — capable, but with a clear IT footprint: SQL Server, client install, Windows landscape. piblaster delivers the same core result in the browser, without running a database in-house.
When Lucidchart isn't enough for P&ID.
Lucidchart is a solid general diagram tool in the browser. As soon as the P&ID has to carry standards compliance, a BOM, tag logic and reviewer workflows, the tool runs out. piblaster keeps the browser comfort — and adds the P&ID specialisation.
