Comparison — PlantEngineer

Alternative to PlantEngineer.

PlantEngineer from X-Visual is a strong Visio add-in — but that's exactly the problem if you don't have Visio, don't want Visio, or work on macOS or Linux. piblaster does the same core job without the Visio dependency.

What PlantEngineer is — and what it requires

PlantEngineer is an add-in for Microsoft Visio. Vendor X-Visual states the requirements clearly in their FAQ: 64-bit Windows 10 or higher, Microsoft Visio Standard or Professional from 2016 on (2019 or Visio Plan 2 recommended), Visio Plan 1 is not supported. And also clear: PlantEngineer does not run on macOS or Linux.

Why that hurts in day-to-day work

  • Visio licenses are a separate cost — Plan 1 is not enough, Plan 2 is noticeably more expensive.
  • External reviewers without Visio can't edit the drawing on equal terms.
  • Mac and Linux colleagues are left out.
  • Updates of Visio, Office and PlantEngineer have to be coordinated.

When PlantEngineer still makes sense

  • You already have a mature Visio setup and licenses in-house.
  • You explicitly need the ANSI/ISA-5.1 or PIP standard for US projects.
  • Windows-only is your company standard anyway.

When piblaster is the better fit

  • You have no Visio license — and don't want to buy one.
  • Colleagues partly work on Mac, Linux or iPad.
  • You want to bring in reviewers and auditors without a software setup.
  • You don't need a 3D VR model — you need a clean P&ID plus BOM.

Frequently asked

Do I need Microsoft Visio for piblaster?

No. piblaster is a standalone application. There's no Visio requirement, no Visio license need and no tie to Microsoft Office. A modern browser is enough.

Can PlantEngineer really not run on macOS?

X-Visual state in their own FAQ that PlantEngineer is only compatible with Microsoft Windows and use on iOS and Linux systems is excluded. For Mac users that leaves either a Windows VM or a Visio-free alternative like piblaster.

Which standards does piblaster support?

The symbol library follows DIN EN ISO 10628. For common German and European practice that's the relevant standard. Custom symbols and company standards can be added.
